Heard of NCT and not much else? This guide covers the free NHS antenatal classes for families having their babies at Saint Mary's, Wythenshawe and Stepping Hill, and the antenatal and pregnancy yoga classes listed on Little Village.
What do antenatal classes cover?
Antenatal classes help you and your birth partner get ready for labour, birth and the first weeks with your baby. The NHS says they usually cover what to expect in labour, ways to relax, different types of birth and interventions, looking after your newborn, and how you might feel during and after pregnancy. Most also cover feeding. The NHS describes them as usually informal and sociable, and a good way to meet people due around the same time as you.
They come as weekly evening courses, a single full day, one-to-one sessions at home or weekly pregnancy yoga, and you can do a free NHS course and something local as well.
Classes are extra to your midwife appointments, not a replacement. If something doesn't feel right during pregnancy, don't save it for a class. Call your midwife or your maternity unit straight away, whatever the time of day.
This guide is general information, not medical advice.
Free NHS antenatal classes in South Manchester
NHS antenatal classes are free. Which one you can join depends on where you're booked to have your baby, and sometimes where you live. Here's what was on offer when we checked in October 2026; your midwife can confirm.
Having your baby at Saint Mary's (Oxford Road) or Wythenshawe
Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust runs Your Birth, Your Baby, free for anyone having their baby at Saint Mary's Oxford Road, Wythenshawe or North Manchester. It runs online on Microsoft Teams over five weeks on weekday evenings, 6pm to 8pm, with midwives and other specialists, covering labour and birth, pain relief, induction, assisted and caesarean birth, feeding, newborn care and safe sleep. You can start at any stage of pregnancy.
To join, ask your midwife to refer you, or email your name and date of birth to parent.classes@mft.nhs.uk (the trust says that inbox isn't checked every day). The earlier you ask, the better your chance of a place. Saint Mary's also runs You are Safe with Us, a free support session for Black, Asian, mixed heritage and ethnically minoritised parents. Details are on Saint Mary's antenatal classes page.
Living in Manchester (Didsbury, Chorlton, Withington, Fallowfield)
With a Manchester postcode (not Trafford, Salford or Bury) you can also join Bump to Baby, a free face-to-face course at Children's Centres and Family Hubs: four weeks of 2-hour weekday sessions in term time, from 17 weeks of pregnancy, covering labour and birth, feeding, mental health and bonding with your baby. Book through your local Family Hub or Children's Centre.
Having your baby at Stepping Hill (Stockport)
Stockport NHS Foundation Trust runs parent education sessions for you and your birth partner, covering your baby's position, hormones in labour, induction, assisted birth and caesareans, bonding and parents' mental health. They're for anyone over 25 weeks pregnant. To book a virtual class, email parenteducation@stockport.nhs.uk with your name, mobile number and due date only (no medical details). Stepping Hill also offers maternity unit tours and a free monthly home birth information evening. See Stockport NHS Foundation Trust's antenatal care page.
Living in Trafford (Sale, Altrincham, Stretford, Urmston)
Bump to Baby doesn't cover Trafford, but if you're booked at Saint Mary's or Wythenshawe you can join Your Birth, Your Baby. Trafford parents can also do a free online course, Understanding pregnancy, labour, birth and your baby; the access code is on the Trafford Directory's parenting courses page.
Saint Mary's also keeps a list of other free antenatal and postnatal classes in Greater Manchester. And if you're employed, GOV.UK says your paid time off for antenatal care can include classes recommended by a doctor or midwife.
Antenatal classes listed on Little Village
The following providers are listed on Little Village. Details are from their own websites, checked in October 2026. Dates and prices change, so always check before you book.
The Nest Collective
An independent antenatal course for expectant parents in south west Manchester. Each course is five Thursday evenings, 7pm to 9pm, at St Margaret's Playing Fields in M16, and the first one starts on 7 January 2027. It's taught by FEDANT-accredited antenatal educators, with a breastfeeding counsellor on the team, and covers how birth works, your rights and choices, induction, caesarean birth, feeding, newborn care, the early weeks at home and local support. Groups are kept to around 6 to 10 couples. Birth partners are welcome, and so are people coming on their own.
When we checked, the full course was £210, with a single-person discount available on request. The Nest Collective suggests joining between 20 and 35 weeks of pregnancy. It also runs free meetups at Benito Lounge in Chorlton: Nest Talks, a short talk and Q&A on the second Thursday of the month at 6:30pm, and Bumps at Benito, a coffee morning on the fourth Saturday of the month at 10:30am, where children are welcome. You sign up for each date on its website.
nestcollective.uk →Hey Baby and Beyond
Taught by an antenatal and postnatal teacher and mum of four who has worked in NHS maternity. The Hey Baby and Beyond website says the teacher also teaches NCT courses around south and central Manchester. The group course is one full Saturday, 10am to 5pm with an hour's break, at Didsbury Golf Club on Ford Lane. It covers labour and birth in detail (where to give birth, pain relief, induction, monitoring, assisted and caesarean birth), then feeding and caring for your newborn, with WhatsApp support afterwards.
When we checked, the full-day course was £185 per couple, secured with a £50 deposit. The 12 December 2026 Didsbury date was already full, and the next Didsbury dates listed were 20 February, 22 May and 28 August 2027. You can also book just the labour and birth session or just the baby care and feeding session (£100 per couple each), or a one-to-one course at home (£350). Hey Baby and Beyond suggests coming from around 24 weeks. The teacher also runs a session for grandparents-to-be and, after the birth, postnatal support, baby massage, sensory and weaning sessions.
heybabyandbeyond.com →Mother's Yoga (Yoga in Chorlton)
Mother's Yoga has taught pregnant and postnatal women for over 15 years, and the teacher trained in Active Birth. The Yoga for Pregnancy and Active Birth class runs on Tuesdays from 6pm to 7:30pm at The Yoga Rooms, 483 Barlow Moor Road, Chorlton. Each class mixes gentle stretching and strengthening, movement and positions for labour, breathing practices, pelvic floor work and a long guided relaxation, with some theory on how birth works. Group and partner work help you share experiences and make friends with others going through it at the same time.
You can start from 14 weeks of pregnancy. When we checked, a block of 8 classes, taken within a 10-week period, cost £112 (£96 concessions). The class focuses on pregnancy and birth rather than feeding or newborn care, so you might pair it with an NHS or private course. After the birth, Mother's Yoga also runs Mum and Baby yoga.
yogainchorlton.co.uk →NCT and other private courses: how to choose
NCT, the national charity, is the name most people know, and it runs paid courses across Manchester, Stockport and Trafford. Independent local courses like The Nest Collective and Hey Baby and Beyond cover the same core ground (labour, birth, feeding and the early weeks), and the people in your group are likely to live nearby.
Whichever you compare, check how many sessions and hours you get, whether your birth partner is included, whether feeding and newborn care are covered, what support you get afterwards, and what happens if your baby arrives early. Book in good time, and ask about parking and access. Other local antenatal and hypnobirthing teachers aren't listed on Little Village yet; we'll add them as they join.
Hypnobirthing and pregnancy yoga
Hypnobirthing combines deep relaxation, breathing, visualisation and self-hypnosis. The NHS says it aims to help you feel calm and confident and can be used alongside pain relief, but that it doesn't stop unexpected things happening. No dedicated hypnobirthing teacher is listed on Little Village yet; the NHS suggests asking your midwife whether local courses include it, or finding an accredited teacher. A pregnancy yoga class such as Mother's Yoga covers some of the same ground, like breathing, relaxation and positions for labour.
After the birth
Our guides to breastfeeding support in South Manchester, postnatal doulas in Manchester and postnatal physio cover the early weeks, and our guides to baby classes in Didsbury, Chorlton and Stockport round up what's on locally. See every guide on our guides page. If you teach antenatal classes, hypnobirthing or pregnancy yoga locally, getting listed is free.
